An Iron Box / Eine eiserne Kassette
Director Nils Olger tracks the history of the pictures on the photo negatives which his grandfather stored in an iron casket. As SS-Master-Sergeant he took war photographs of his division “Reichsführer SS”, which was under command of the Nazi war criminal Walter Reder, who was released from Italy in 1985 and welcomed in honours by the Austrian minister of foreign affairs. This caused a scandal named “Reder-Frischenschlager Affair”. The filmmaker talks to his grandmother, to historians and to the descendants of the victims – carefully, without pathos but nonetheless personal.
