1938 Different / 1938 – Diversi

Poster for 1938 Different / 1938 – Diversi Some eighty years after racial laws against Italy’s Jewish community were enacted, 1938 DIFFERENT proffers an unsettling new read on the role of mass media and propaganda in one of humankind's most tragic episodes. Italy’s wanton invasion of Ethiopia heralded a similar Fascist campaign against the country's Jews. In September 1938, Mussolini declared restrictive racial laws, stripping non-Aryans of their livelihoods and civil rights. After existing peacefully with its Jewish minority for eons, Italy was provoked to anti-Semitic hate. Oscar-nominated director Giorgio Treves deftly cuts among vivid archival footage, expert commentary, slanderous political cartoons, animated sequences, and highly moving testimonies of those who experienced humiliation, discrimination and violence firsthand.
