Vienna Before Nightfall / Vienne avant la nuit

Filmmaker Robert Bober takes us on a journey of Austria’s rich Jewish literary and artistic history pre-World War II, when the city was considered the European cultural capital. Stories of Bober’s family are intertwined with those of Viennese intellectuals including Stefan Zweig, Arthur Schnitzler and Sigmund Freud who lived in the city during this period. Combining archival footage, old photographs, images of modern Vienna and some beautiful Yiddish narration, Bober crafts a poetic exploration of Viennese Jewish life, from the collapse of the Habsburg Empire to the Anschluss by Nazi Germany.
