The Zionist Idea: A History / Colliding Dreams

We live at a moment in time when the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, now more than a century old, continues to be of overwhelming international political and societal importance. From its inception, that conflict has also, of course, had powerful and deeply troubling consequences for Israelis and Palestinians themselves. The story at its most basic level is one that involves two peoples struggling for national recognition and expression in a small but richly significant piece of land. The tragedy of this history, as both the Israeli novelist, Amos Oz, and the Palestinian scholar, Sari Nusseibeh, have each pointed out, stems from a conflict between the rights of two peoples with equal and legitimate aspirations to nationhood and self-expression in a single small territory to which they can both lay claim.

What a Travesty!: Melanie Phillips on the Doc “The Zionist Ideal”

A movie called The Zionist Idea has been making its way round Jewish film festivals in the US. I caught up with it this week when it was shown at the Jewish Film Festival in London. I wish I hadn’t.

Exclusive Trailer for a Fabulous New Zionism Documentary

Was Zionism a lifesaving ideology, or is it a form of colonialism, “oppressive because it is exclusive”? A wide range of Israelis and Palestinians ask versions of this question in what should be the next must-see documentary high school and college instructors teaching the Middle East use to introduce their students to the impact of Zionism. And the trailer is being released exclusively on Jewniverse

‘Colliding Dreams’ tells about all sides of Zionism

Rudavsky said in a press release for the movie: “Too few people know the idealism, determination and desperation of Jews in the late nineteenth century through the catastrophes of the mid-20th century. Too few know the stories of the dedicated idealists who gave heart and soul to build the institutions that created the state.

‘Colliding Dreams’ review: Documentary explores Israel-Palestinian issue

“Colliding Dreams” is a film of ideas and a film of history, a thorough and engrossing look at the root causes of the tortured relationship between Israel and the Palestinians. But as far as its title goes, “Collapsing Dream” would have been a more accurate choice.
