Shylock’s Ghost

Commissioned to write a modern retelling of The Merchant of Venice, Man Booker Prize-winner Howard Jacobson travels to the Venice ghetto with BBC host Alan Yentob to explore the most divisive fictional Jew in history, Shylock. Tackling the thorny issue of the play’s perceived anti-Semitism, Jacobson and Yentob interview the world’s leading Shakespeare authorities who provide an insightful and entertaining analysis of this most complex character. Interspersed with the interviews are clips from different stage adaptations of the play, underscoring the myriad of ways that Shylock has been portrayed through the ages.
