Sabena Hijacking: My Version

ollow the true story of the hijacking of Vienna-to-Tel Aviv Sabena flight 571 on May 8, 1972, by four armed members of “Black September,” a Palestinian terrorist group with ties to Fatah and the PLO. Based on pilot Reginald Levy’s firstperson account, this docudrama fuses compelling cinematic reenactments of the events, genuine archival material, and exclusive interviews with revered Israeli political leaders Benjamin Netanyahu, Ehud Barak, and Shimon Peres, who were in charge of the rescue effort. Suspenseful and riveting, this fast-paced film is a finalist for the 2015 Ophir Awards (Israeli Academy Awards).

    Sabena Hijacking

Sabena Hijacking, directed by Rani Sa’ar, is a fascinating feature-length film which was broadcast on Israeli TV Channel 2 this week. It provides an interesting combination of documentary and historical drama and offers a re-enactment of the hijacking of the Sabena airliner in 1972 in which four members of the Black September terrorist group grabbed a passenger plane on the way to Tel Aviv in an attempt to free about 300 Palestinian activists from Israeli prisons. They threatened to blow up the plane and all of its passengers and crew if the prisoners were not released.

The version referred to in “Sabena Hijacking: My Version” belongs to British airline pilot Reginald Levy, captain of Sabena Flight 971 when it was seized by Palestinian terrorists in May 1972. A tape telling his side of the story was reportedly found among his effects after his death, and this documentary at the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival was created from that narrative and from a book he wrote on the subject.
