Review: ‘Dough’ rises in spots but falters in others

While this ensures that Dough remains a universal story that easier relatable, it does mean that the film never quite digs deep enough into how Nat and Ayyash are defined, inspired or in conflict with their faith. The prejudice that the two seemingly harbor doesn’t quite inform their relationship as much as it should. This leaves Dough’s generation-gap humor and observations to ring true in a way that its culture clash does not.

‘Dough’ filmmaker uses humor to build bridges

Producer and director John Goldschmidt has a recipe in mind for the release his movie, “Dough,” a comedy-drama set in a declining kosher bakery in London’s East End where an inadvertently introduced new “ingredient” sets sales rising to a new “high.”

‘Dough’: Getting ‘Baked’ At The Charlotte Jewish Film Festival

Like its namesake mixture of flour, water, and yeast, “Dough” is a film with a simple story that rises to transform itself into something wonderful.

‘Dough’ is worth spending your cash on

An improbable plot in a film is not necessarily a liability, especially when a movie has other things going for it — great acting, a funny and touching script with a good heart and an uplifting message, sure-footed direction, excellent cinematography and appealing, and off-center characters.

‘Dough’ actor Jonathan Pryce drawn by its message

He is rehearsing for “The Merchant of Venice” at Shakespeare’s Globe but was happy to take a little time to talk about how he seems to be everywhere these days, including in “Dough,” a dramedy screening twice during the Mandell JCC Hartford Jewish Film Festival.
