Absent God

The philosopher Emmanuel Levinas merged the experience of the Holocaust with Talmudic wisdom and contemporary Western philosophy. The film presents Levinas’ notion of “ethics as optics,” which draws a line between the biblical prohibition of images, a unique analysis of the human face and modern-day visual representation of morality. The film comprises interviews with Levinas, archival footage from the beginning of the 20th century to the present, and interviews with leading philosophers and artists: Jean-Luc Marion, Luc Dardenne, Michael Levinas, Catherine Chalier, Daniel Epstein, Youssef Seddik, Hagi Kenaan and others.
