Pepe Danquart’s Holocaust drama sticks faithfully but unimaginatively to its source.

“Run Boy Run” tells the true story of Yoram Israel Fridman, who was smuggled out of the Warsaw Ghetto at age eight.

Cinematographer Daniel Gottschalk (Krabat: The Satanic Mill) and production designer Matthias Muesse (who earlier evoked the Nazi-period in the boarding school drama Napola) deliver work that’s very much in step with the film’s direction in that it’s solid but not exactly outside-the-box.

At times director Pepe Danquart’s take falls into parody, as in the unflinchingly cruel, handsome blond Germans who seem to waste great resources chasing one boy. But, overall, “Run Boy Run” is a powerful tale of good, evil and survival. Tkaczz is a revelation as the lost boy who is strong enough to find his way, but still young enough to break down and bawl at the madness around him.

The story and human behaviours are complex (those of the Polish people, the Germans and the Jews) and younger audiences can sense this because the director avoided clichés.

  6. jewishfilmfests says:

Danquart, who won an Oscar in 1993 for his short film ‘Black Rider,’ interviewed 700 youngsters before finding twins Andrzej & Kamil Tkaczz for the central role of Srulik/Jurek. The young fellows’ tandem-performance brings justice to Fridman, as a representative of the Holocaust survivors. Furthermore, the director’s depiction of the desolated vast spaces, traversed by the lone boy, amplifies his dejected path, as he succeeds on the long run in his race for life.

Run Boy Run follows the harrowing odyssey of a Polish-Jewish youngster named Srulik who evades betrayal by anti-Semitic Poles and capture by the Germans for three years. Through flashbacks, the audience learns that his father had him smuggled out of the Warsaw Ghetto after he promised that he would survive and never forget he was Jewish.
