The Winnings Of Frankie Walls
A bold and stirring drama, produced as part of CBC’s drama anthology programme For the Record, that contains one of Al Waxman’s most critically acclaimed performances. In the title role, he plays a middle-aged labourer and father of three who is suddenly laid off and begins an uphill journey to find another job. Waxman delivers a complex and nuanced performance as Walls finds his male identity undermined by his inability to provide for his family. In developing this character, Waxman drew on his memory of his Jewish father’s strong work ethic. With its compassionate portrait of working class lives, The Winning of Frankie Walls is, sadly, the kind of TV drama that we don’t see much of any more.
