The Making of a President, 1944

A funny and endearing portrait of Jewish life in wartime Sault Ste. Marie, based on a short story by Morley Torgov. When the mayor invites the president of the Jewish congregation to speak at the town’s upcoming ecumenical war bonds rally, the Jewish elders see this as a window of possible acceptance by the non-Jewish leaders of the town. Unfortunately, the president has just quit and nobody in their right mind wants the thankless position. Who can they find to properly represent the Jews of the town? A sadly-forgotten CBC teleplay starring Melvyn Douglas, Nehemiah Persoff, Paul Soles, Paul Kligman, Alfie Scopp, Harvey Atkin and a fifteen-year-old Mike Myers.
