Columbo: Murder by the Book

The very first episode of the Columbo series, Murder by the Book was directed by a young Steven Spielberg, who gave it a cinematic flair that was rare for television at the time. Written by future TV trailblazer Steven Bochco (Hill Street Blues, NYPD Blue), this episode of the series has Jack Cassidy play one half of a writing duo specializing in bestselling murder mysteries. Once his partner, Jim Ferris (Martin Milner), decides he wants to try a solo writing career, a begrudging Ken plots what he thinks will be the perfect murder. Will Lt Columbo (Peter Falk) be able to discover any of the murderer’s missteps?
