The Man in the Funny Suit

Directed and written by Ralph Nelson, this episode of Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse is one of the most insightful artifacts from “The Golden Age of Television.” Ed and Keenan Wynn and Rod Serling play themselves in this backstage docudrama that reenacts the making of the Playhouse 90 production of Serling’s Requiem for a Heavyweight. The Man in the Funny Suit explores the relationship between father and son, Ed and Keenan, as beloved comic Ed Wynn struggles in his first dramatic role. This surprisingly touching character study provides an invaluable behind-the-scenes glimpse at how these live shows were put together.
