Palestine 1896

Louis and Auguste Lumière, the inventors of cinema, used to send their cameramen to different "exotic" places in the world. In 1897 their DoP Alexandre Promio went to Palestine. His 16 one-minute films show impressions of the old harbour of Jaffa, Bethlehem and Jerusalem, and concentrates on the exotic costumes of the Arab population. The hills around Jerusalem were shot by courageous Alexandre Promio on top of a sliding train. (From: )
