BayFlicks.Net: Lincoln Spector: Jewish Film Festival Preview
I’ve previewed five films that will screen at this year’s San Francisco Jewish Film Festival. Here’s what I thought of them, in order from best to worst.
Curiously, the two best are also the least Jewish. I guess they were so good they had to be added anyway.

Eat Drink Films: Michael Fox: SF Jewish Film Festival Exudes a Sense of Responsibility
“Sometimes a movie is just a movie, to appropriate the one-liner apocryphally attributed to Sigmund Freud. (“Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar” actually sounds to my ears more like something another Jewish intellectual, Groucho Marx, would have said. But I digress.) As far as the typical filmgoer is concerned, movies are stories, diversions, entertainment and, on rare and special occasions, art. But for a great swath of movies, even some produced by Hollywood studios (credo: “Profits first, last and always”), palpable moral consciousness is as central as the plot. To those of us who esteem cinema as a social good, those films are often the most exciting and profound. ”

Radio Valencia: Lemme Ask You a Question with Delfin Vigil
“The 34th The San Francisco Jewish Film Festival opens next Thursday with fab new films ranging in subjects from baseball and Bar Mitzvahs in Havana to an Argentine anti-romantic-comedy film critic whose life becomes a romantic comedy. Festival programmer and local filmmaker-maven Joshua Moore stops by to prep us for the nach a mool’n highlights and play some of his favorite records while sharing some memories of sifting through Francis Ford Coppola’s rolodex. ”

SF Weekly: Jonathan Kiefer: San Francisco Jewish Film Festival: Weddings, Kidnappings, and a Romantic Comedy or Two Round Out This Year’s Festival
“Begging your indulgence, this briefest of critical dispatches on the annual San Francisco Jewish Film Festival will begin and end with talk of a movie about a movie critic. Outwardly the most Jewish thing about El Critico, from Argentina, might be a single mezuzah, glimpsed only briefly, in one apartment-building doorway.”

    Through a Jewish lens
    by David Lamble
“The 34th San Francisco Jewish Film Festival runs July 24 through August 10 at the Castro Theatre and RayKo Photo Center in San Francisco, CineArts in Palo Alto, Berkeley’s California Theatre and Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Oakland’s New Parkway Theatre and Grand Lake Theater, and the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center in San Rafael. This festival has a couple of queer gems, special guests, world premieres and a number of panels where real people can talk face-to-face.”
