Born on April 14: Adrien Brody, the pianist Szpilman in “The Pianist”
Happy Birthday to Adrien Brody! He is 47 years old today. “He received widespread recognition and acclaim after starring in Roman Polanski’s The Pianist (2002), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor at age twenty-nine, making him the youngest actor to win in that category.” (Wikipedia) He played leading roles in several Wes Anderson movies (The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Darjeeling Limited) and also played Jewish charcters: in the Houdini TV series and Septembers of Shiraz.
“The American star’s mother, Sylvia Plachy, is renowned Hungarian-born photographer, who fled Communist Hungary as a child during the 1956 revolution against the Soviets. Adrien’s maternal grandfather was from an aristocratic Hungarian background, while Adrien’s maternal grandmother was of Czech Jewish descent. Sylvia Plachy was not aware of her own mother’s Jewish background until later in life. Adrien’s father, the history teacher Elliot Brody is of Polish Jewish descent, who lost family members in the Holocaust.” (Hungary Today)
